Behind Born to Slay

Disappointed with the lack of inspiring women-led media, and hungry to create her own opportunities to act, Zara Goodman began developing Born to Slay in October 2023 after experiencing a "divine creative intervention."

What began as a vision of a club-going vampire slayer, quickly evolved into a myth about three girls, best friends, who slay vampires whilst overcoming their own personal demons, in a world parallel to ours governed by Magick and marked with political upheaval and an ever-present war against night creatures.

Born to Slay is centred around powerful lessons of womanhood, identity, struggles with trauma and addiction, and the journey towards self-love and healing. How does a woman who can slay vampires be so vulnerable when it comes to love? Born to Slay embraces and celebrates the fluidity and ambiguity of femininity - of being both strong and soft, independent and relational, brutal and gentle, cold and kind. Born to Slay is about women, by women, for women.

Zara believes that Born to Slay will resonate deeply with the modern young woman, and has expressly written the series for women aged 17 to 25.

It all began with a divine creative intervention. One evening, I was listening to music, and I saw her - a beautiful dark-haired girl, swaying to the beat, showered in the neon pink lights of the club. A man came up behind her, flashing his fangs at her bare neck, and she smiled, before whipping around and staking him in the heart. I ran to my laptop and Born to Slay took its first breath.
